Celtic Football Club was formed in 1887 by Irish Marist Brother Walfrid in St. Mary's church hall in Glasgow, with the purpose of raising money for the Poor Children's Dinner Table (a poverty charity in Glasgow’s East End). This effort to create a football club for fund-raising purposes was inspired by Hibernian, who had formed for similar reasons a few years previously. The name 'Celtic' was intended to reflect the club's Irish and Scottish roots. On 28 May 1888, Celtic played their first official match against Rangers and won 5–2, with Neil McCallum scoring the first ever goal for Celtic. In 1889 Celtic reached the final of the Scottish Cup, but were defeated 2–1 in the final. In 1892 they were able to claim the victory they deserved in the Scottish Cup and beat Queen’s Park quite handily 5-2. In the same year they moved to their new ground at Celtic Park, and were able to claim the Scottish League Championship for their first time. From 1905 to 1910, Celtic won the Scottish League Championship every year, giving them an unprecedented six consecutive victories. They also won the Double in both 1907 and 1908, claiming the Scottish Cup twice in a row.
In 1945, ex-captain Jimmy McGrory took over the club and would guide them to win the Coronation Cup in 1953, a special one-off tournament commemorating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, another double in 1954 and a record 7-1 victory over Rangers in the Scottish League Cup final. Under Jock Stein, McGrory’s successor, Celtic enjoyed their most successful era ever and won everything they entered in 1967, taking home glory at the Scottish League, the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League Cup, the Glasgow Cup, and the European Cup. In the early 1990s, Celtic almost went into receivership, but mere minutes before declaring bankruptcy they were taken over by Fergus McCann, who reconstituted the business as a public limited company and rebuilt their fortunes. Although their performance had waned as a club, they were able to get back to form by 1998 and win the title again. In 2000 Martin O’Neill took charge and led the club to three SPL championships out of five, as well as the domestic treble which had not been achieved since Jock Stein’s era. His successor, Gordon Strachan, achieved a similar feat by becoming the third Celtic manager to win three titles in a row, as well as the UEFA Champions League knockout stage in 2006-2007.
In 2014 Celtic claimed another run of three consecutive league titles, and continue to go from strength to strength.
