About Stern Pinball Inc.

It all began with Sam Stern, who operated pinball machines in the 1930s. They were becoming increasingly popular in the bars and restaurants where he worked in Philadelphia and he soon became so successful that he began distributing them too.
In 1947, Sam paid a visit to the founder of the leading pinball manufacturer at the time, Harry Williams of Williams Manufacturing Company. He convinced Harry to sell him half of the company and became the President of Williams. Through the 1950s and 60s Sam and Harry kept building the business successfully and before long it became a family affair, with Sam’s son Gary, at the age of 16, working in the Williams stock room.
Gary founded Delta East Pinball in 1986, after his father passed away. It was then bought by Sega in 1994, before Gary bought it back in 1999 and re-named it Stern Pinball Inc. He intended the company to be aimed at a different clientele, incorporating licensed themes and aiming them at bars and restaurants. A few weeks later Williams pulled out of pinball production to concentrate on the manufacture of slot machines, making way for Stern to become the main manufacturer of pinball machines in the following years.
