How to Play Pool: Address & Stance

How to Play Pool, with Gareth Potts, 3 times World Champion. In this edition Gareth explains how to set-up with the right address and stance.

Video Transcription:

Gareth Potts: So, this is how to address the shot and how to stand
during the shot. Because I'm left handed, what I do is, when I
address the shot, my left leg, actually, gets locked. So, my
left leg comes back, and locks, and my knee gets pushed back and
my leg is solid. And then address the shot and walk in. My
right leg then becomes bent and my left leg is locked. As you
can see, this doesn't move, this is bent, which then gives me
the stability onto the shot, which then I can't move anywhere
because the leg is locked, this leg is bent. So therefore I'm
completely rigid on the shot which allows me to push the cue
through, in a straight line without there being any body
movement because my legs are in a position where my body can't
move.

So I've just explained to you how I would address the shot and
how I would stand on the shot, but obviously the majority of
people are right handed. It's exactly the same principle, you
walk into the shot exactly the same way, it's just the reverse.
So, instead of your left leg being locked, like it would be for
me because I'm left handed, it's just the complete opposite.
Your right leg then becomes locked, your right knee pushes back
and your left leg then becomes bent. Just the complete opposite
of how I would play. Then, you address the shot the exact same,
you walk into the shot the exact same, it's just the reverse if
your left handed to right handed. It gives you the same
stability to then get down on the shot without any movement when
pushing the cue through.

Okay, so this is how you should address every single shot,
whether it's a tough shot or an easy shot, if you address the
shot the same then you are always in a position when you play
the shot. What I would normally do is, because I'm left handed;
my left leg would be locked, as I explained before, feet
pointing towards the shot. My left leg then doesn't move once
I've set it in the right place, pointing towards the shot I'm
going to play. My left leg is straight and then walk into the
shot, my right leg bent as I explained before, but my left leg
from now on, doesn't move whilst I get down to the shot. So my
left leg is planted to the floor, I get down, onto the shot, my
right leg becomes slightly bent, left leg still locked, down
onto the shot, nothing moves. Left leg still locked, right leg
bent, gives me the stability, don't need to move, nothing has
moved. And then draw the cue back, I'm able to push through in a
straight line without any of my body moving at all.
